Safety Officer

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work
environment on all job sites. This role ensures compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and company safety policies, and actively engages with site staff and subcontractors to enforce safe work practices.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide active H&S leadership by participating in and demonstrating an interest in health & safety, and setting a good example for workers through attitude, conduct, and compliance with safety requirements.
• Work closely with forepersons and project managers to implement and monitor the company’s health and safety policies and procedures on jobsites.
• Travel to jobsites and conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, and prepare detailed reports with recommendations.
• Lead Joint Health & Safety Committee and collaborate with management and worker representatives.
• Support site supervisors and project managers in developing and maintaining site-specific safety plans.
• Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to safe work procedures among employees and subcontractors.
• Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
• Maintain accurate safety records, including training certifications, inspection logs, and incident reports.
• Stay up to date with relevant safety legislation and industry best practices (e.g., OHSA, CSA standards, WSIB requirements).
• Facilitate or coordinate safety training sessions for workers and supervisors.
• Act as a key point of contact for all health and safety-related matters on-site.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 3–5 years of health and safety experience in a construction environment, preferably in the electrical or ICI sector.
• Certification in health and safety (e.g., CRSP, CHSO, NCSO, or equivalent) is an asset.
• Sound knowledge of construction safety regulations, electrical safety standards, and risk mitigation practices.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient with safety management systems.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
