Our electricians, all of whom have an average of 25 years’ experience with the company, are licensed and background security checked.
Birnie Electric has been in business since 1967, the company is well financed, fully insured, bondable and current with WSIB.
Our extensive experience and specialized expertise gives us the know-how to deliver even the most complex projects on time and on budget.
Tim Birnie, P.Eng.
Tim has been devoted to building a team of electricians dedicated to safety and customer service excellence since taking over the business from his father, who founded the company in 1967. A graduate of Queen’s University with a BSc Honours Electrical Engineering, Tim joined the family business in 1981 on a path to learn the business from the ground up becoming President in 1999 and Principal/Owner in 2006. He has overseen dramatic growth in the business in recent years, including:
- 2010: Founded Birnie HOME SAFE, offering an exclusive, non-invasive residential Electrical Hazards Detection program that detects hazards hidden behind the walls before they become emergencies.
- 2011: Acquisition of Canada Electric, a leading electrical contractor with expertise in office/highrise and healthcare design-build and maintenance service.
Craig Hanley, P.Eng. LEED® AP
Vice President, Pre-Construction
Craig has specialized construction estimating expertise to assist Birnie Electric clients at the design phase of any project.
A 2004 graduate of Queen’s University with a BSc in Mathematics and Engineering, Craig has also achieved LEED®AP accreditation, helping a number of Birnie clients achieve LEED certification on sustainable green projects with significant long-term cost savings.
Brian Scholz, MBA, P.Eng.
Vice President, Operations
Brian oversees all facets of Birnie Electric’s operations so as to ensure prompt delivery of unparalleled service and maintenance of the highest standards of workplace and client safety.
Brian’s applied experience as a consultant, operations executive and entrepreneur contributes to the continued growth and efficiency of Birnie Electric while holding true to our corporate Vision, Mission, and Core Values.
A graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management, Brian holds both his P.Eng. certification and MBA credentials.
General Manager HOME SAFE
John brings more than 30 years of experience to Birnie Electric. John played an integral role in the acquisition of Canada Electric in 2011.
After overseeing the successful integration of operations between the two companies, John has been a catalyst behind a company-wide dedication to customer satisfaction and workplace safety.
A graduate of George Brown College and a journeyman electrician, John has since achieved accreditations in Electrician-Construction and Maintenance and Industrial Electrician through the Apprenticeship and Tradesman Qualification Act.
John is currently the General Manager of Birnie HOME SAFE, a division of Birnie Electric that provides residential electrical services.
Manager Project Sales/Estimating
With almost 30 years’ experience as a certified electrician, foreman and estimator, Roy brings expertise and insights to his role as Project Manager overseeing projects from start to finish. Roy joined Birnie electric in 2011 with the acquisition of Canada Electric, where he had overseen projects requiring up to 40 men on such sites as the Canadian Tire warehouse, Hip Interactive, St. Lawrence Cement and Pickering Town Centre.
Roy’s experience also extends to the healthcare field, having worked on sites such as Glaxo Pharmaceuticals, Women’s College Hospital and Ontario Research.
His profession credentials include licences in Construction and Maintenance Licence, Electrical Masters, Industrial Electrician and Superintendents.
BA Electrical & Electronic Engineering
Industrial & Service Estimating
A 1997 graduate of China’s Shenyang Jianzhu University, Leo brings extensive experience to his role as Project Manager. Prior to joining Birnie Electric in 2006, Leo gained experience with Siemens in their Industrial Solutions and Services Group and a large Chinese construction engineering firm. His professional accreditations include:
- Change Order Management in Electrical Construction Certificate
- Comprehensive Practices for Effective Electrical Project Management Certificate
Keith brings more than 20 years’ experience on a variety of major projects to each Birnie Electric job site.
He joined Birnie Electric in early 2015 after a number of years as construction manager at Lockerbie & Hole, formerly a subsidiary of Aecon.
His project experience includes aerospace (Westjet hangar upgrade), hospital facilities, recreation centres, solar parks and most recently light rail transit.
He is currently a Project Manager for several high-profile jobs at Birnie Electric.
Andrew joins Birnie Electric with experience in quality assurance management and as a workface planner and project coordinator for a multimillion dollar oil-sands upgrade project in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
Currently a project coordinator at Birnie Electric, Andrew is responsible for project processes including procurement, shop drawing, RFI, change order and assisting in estimation. He is also extensively involved in project controls on all major undertakings.
Andrew is a Graduate from McMaster University with a B.Eng in Electrical Engineering.
Gavin has almost 30 years of experience in the electrical field, having spent the last 8 years as an estimator.
As a successful estimator, Gavin has worked on projects of varying degrees of size and complexity in all sectors of the industry ranging from service, commercial, industrial and utility solar.
Gavin, a graduate of Humber College and a licensed electrician, has earned many achievements, accreditations and certificates in his professional career.
He is currently working on several projects here at Birnie Electric.
Finlay McCallum, M.E.
Manager, Business Development
Finlay is a well-rounded electrical professional with more than 25 years of industrial, commercial and solar installations experience.
In his professional career, he has held several titles in sales, estimating, supervision, project management and senior management positions for both electrical and multi-trade Companies within the GTA.
As the Manager of Business Development at Birnie Electric, Finlay extends his extensive knowledge of process-production installations and client satisfaction when overseeing the design and implementation of project team pursuits.
Kristen joins the Birnie team as Project Administrator with more than 13 years of experience in the electrical industry.
Her strong interpersonal, administrative and organizational skills make her a great asset to Birnie Electric. Kristen strives towards making customers and clients happy.
Kristen is currently taking courses at Sheridan College towards a certificate in Commercial Construction Management.
With over 25 years of experience in the Construction industry, Michele joined the Birnie Electric Team in 2011.
As Birnie Electric’s Service Manager, Michele works alongside Birnie’s service team to provide high-level support and maintenance to a variety of industries such as the Energy Sector, Health Networks, Property Management, Manufacturing and Storage Facilities.
Michele has an Honours Degree in Business Management.
Robin Qu, CRSP, CSP, MSc
Health & Safety Manager
Robin joins Birnie Electric with more than 20 years of record achievements and successful leadership as a health, safety and environmental (HSE) professional.
Prior to joining Birnie Electric in 2018, Robin developed and championed safety initiatives and programs for TO2015 (the Pan Am and Parapan Am games), Bombardier Transportation, The City of Mississauga and Ainsworth Inc..
Robin’s abundant energy, creativity, dedication, knowledge, skills and years of experience have made him a successful HSE professional.
Robin has CRSP and CSP designations and has a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering.
Joel joins Birnie Electric with experience in a variety of research, engineering, and project management roles gained through the University of Waterloo’s cooperative education program.
Currently a project coordinator for Birnie Electric on the Crosstown LRT project, Joel is responsible for project processes including procurement, shop drawings, RFI, assisting in site layout, drafting, quality control, and assisting in estimation.
Joel is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with a BASc in Chemical Engineering.
